The state of California is paying off past due rent accrued during the COVID-19 pandemic, giving renters a clean slate. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced recently that $5 billion in funds from Congressionally approved aid packages was enough to pay off overdue rent, according to his senior counselor on housing and homelessness Jason Elliott with the Associated Press reporting earlier this month. However, just $32 million out of an estimated 490 million requests for rental assistance through May 31 have been covered so far by only one program aimed at reducing rents among low-income workers who are struggling financially after losing their jobs or homes because of these recent natural disasters such as wildfires and mudslides caused by heavy rains last year while others remain undiscovered based on data available
